Can Apple Watch count reps?

It can automatically count reps using 3rd party apps, however as of today all automatic rep counting Apple Watch apps have died/gone out of business.

Instead there are manual rep counting apps on the apple watch which can help.

How do I manually add exercise to Apple Watch?

You can add workouts manually, but they will not count towards your rings.

Workouts can be added manually to the Health app on your iPhone, which aggregates all health and activity data from your Apple Watch, iPhone and any other sources:

To add a workout, go to: Health Data (tab) > Activity > tap on Workouts > tap on the "+" sign (upper-right) > enter your workout data.
Active Energy can also be added manually to the Health app on your iPhone:

To add data, go to: Health Data > Activity > tap on Active Energy > tap on the "+" sign (upper-right) > enter your data.

What happens if my Apple Watch dies during a workout?

Firstly, as it has died it will not track any more exercise.

Depending on what OS your Apple Watch is running, when you power it back up it will either sync the workout to your phone (phone must be nearby) or it will continue the workout.

We advise that you watch out for this when you put it back on the charger.

Back before OS4 you would lose all your workout data. Boy did that suck.

Yes it absolutely does.

Your apple watch doesn't just calculate your calorie burn based on your heart rate, it has an algorithm for every type of exercise that uses your heart rate to work out your calories.

HIIT vs cycling for example - you can get you heart rate to the same place but physically are going to burn more calories doing HIIT than cycling.

So make sure you pick the right workout!

To reveal the HIIT option, scroll down to the bottom of the workout list and tap on Add Workout.

Then scroll down a longer list until your find High Intensity Interval Training and tap on it. It will now be added to the main menu.

Apple’s HIIT workout doesn’t provide any special features. You just get the three basic metrics common to all “other” workouts: Duration, Heart Rate and Calories. But Apple optimized the motion and heart rate algorithms for HIIT, so at least your stats you should be more accurate when you use this option.

Yes, but that is because you told it so.

Your Apple Watch uses your personal information — such as your height, weight, gender, and age — to calculate how many calories you burn and more. 

To update your personal information, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Tap the My Watch tab, then tap Health > Health Profile. Tap Edit, then tap the item that you want to change.

What does mixed cardio mean on Apple Watch?

Mixed Cardio is a catchall category for exercise with periods of high and low intensity work.

So if you're doing full blown HIIT don't use this setting, but if you're lifting weights and there are rest periods - this is great!

Here are some examples from users on what they use Mixed Cardio for:

Can I wear my Apple Watch during hot yoga?

No. Apple Watch should not be worn during hot yoga.
Whilst Other would be the most appropriate activity type for recording regular yoga using the Workout app, wearing your watch during hot yoga (which is performed in hot and humid conditions) would fall outside of Apple's handling guidelines for your Apple Watch.

​Apple's advises that:

  • Apple Watch is designed for use in ambient temperatures between 32° and 95° F (0° and 35° C).
  • Your watch can be damaged and battery life shortened if used outside of this range.
  • You should avoid exposing your watch to dramatic changes in temperature or humidity.
  • Examples of usage that may affect the water resistance of your watch and should be avoided include wearing it in a sauna or steam room.

Note that using your watch outside of Apple's handling guidelines may render your watch ineligible for service under warranty, AppleCare+ and/or chargeable repair service.

If you want to do a workout of pushups - select workout type other.

If you want the apple watch to track the individual pushups you do - it can do that! You will need to use a 3rd party app though.

Does yoga count as exercise Apple Watch?

Does yoga count as exercise Apple Watch?

Whether Yoga counts as exercise is up to you.

To record a yoga workout, select "Other" in the Workout app on your Apple Watch. The workout can be named as yoga when you end and save the workout.
